Now I can not remember if he specifically mentioned this, quite likely, or if was just an impression I received from listening to his commentary but it very much sounded like the tech guard were on the team voice channel rather than on individual squad channels.
If they were on the team channel rather than squad it would suggest that they had a team leader guiding the entire team rather than seperate squads acting mostly independently. Now one person guiding the entire teams strategy can be very effective, and it sounds like the tech guard were trying to find an effective method of doing this, but I believe the greatest weakness of team chat is the fact that there are too many people on comms e.g. If someone announces danger front, unless they have a unique voice, then none of the squads will know which squad this announcement applies to.
This is a weakness of the system rather than of individual squads. What we need is a means for the team leader and squad leaders to communicate quickly and easily without the squad leaders dropping out of squad chat. Or as an alternative you have your regular squads in squad chat and a 17th member of the team in the warbarge or MCC who is looking at a RTS map and has the ability to break into each of the 3 squads chat, almost like a 7th member of the squad. As he is not being shot at he does not need to be constantly looking around him while he gives instructions to each squad.
For this to work his map should highlight enemies on the map as they are seen or detected by each member of his team on the ground. This allows for the fog of war I.e. a player who is not seen by anybody will not show on the map but anybody who is seen etc will appear on the map until they move out of sight.
This way the commander would see 6 red dots appear in front of squad A as contact is made and orders squad A to attack only to see it was a trap when 6 more reds appear on the map from a different position ambushing squad A etc.
As maps get bigger and the consequences of loosing matches increase we need more effective means of communicating.
Make it so CCP.
Apologies to tech guard if none of this was actually part of your game play for that match. It just got me thinking about comms is all.
There is a very easy solution to this.
1. Everyone joins team chat 2. Squad leaders mute all but those in their own squad, and the other squad leaders 3. Squad members mute all but their own squad, and their own squad leader. 4. Name the squads
When you do this, the squad leaders can hear what other orders squad leaders are giving, and can then relay orders to their own squad in such a way as to communicate an overall objective.
For example, if my squad are the "Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers", and my companion squad is "Darkwing Ducks", then when I give an order, I would say "Rangers to Bravo now!", my team works to coordinate the move to Bravo, and the Ducks' squad leader knows what we are about. If the Ducks' squad leader sees someone coming to cut us off, he then might say "Ducks give covering fire between Alpha and Bravo!" The Ducks and can then coordinate their own actions without having comms traffic overlapping with the Rangers, and vice versa. I would also recommend two leaders in each squad - one person in charge of overall objectives (strategy) and one in charge of individual orders (tactics).
This is extremely effective. |
